ART reveals super confidence gap and how annual statements can help
Media release - 30 October 2025
Research by Australian Retirement Trust (ART) shows barely one in three Australians feel confident they are on track for their retirement goals, while twice that number admit they need to pay more attention to their super.
ART Executive General Manager for Advocacy and Impact Anne Fuchs said that as ART members and other Australians see annual super statements hitting their inboxes between now and December, it’s the perfect thing to check off and review before the year comes to an end.
“Nearly one million of our members have already opened their annual statements, which reinforces what our research shows - Australians understand the importance of engaging with their super, but there’s still a confidence gap,” Ms Fuchs said.
“Annual statements are like an annual health check for your super that enables a member to better understand their retirement nest egg.
“And like your health check, it’s best not to ignore the state of your super.
“Your annual statement tells you how your super is performing, where it’s being invested, how much your employer and you are contributing, and what fees or insurance you’re paying.
“And like a health check, if you see something that needs further attention you can go to a specialist in the form of a financial adviser.”
ART is especially encouraging women to engage with their super, as they continue to report lower confidence than men in reaching their desired retirement balance.
“We want women in particular to take a moment to review their annual statement, as our research shows they’re more likely than men to feel uncertain about having enough for retirement,” said Ms Fuchs.
“Their annual statement is a great starting point in addressing this uncertainty.
“It’s not complicated, it’s a practical tool that helps you understand where you’re currently at and what changes you might want to make.”
“Super is one of the most important financial assets you’ll ever own.
“Don’t let it sit unchecked – taking a few minutes now could make a huge difference to your future.”

Survey findings
- More than seven in ten (72%) Australians agree that they need to pay more attention to their superannuation.
- Less than two in five (37%) Australians are confident they'll have enough money in their superannuation when they retire to fund their desired retirement. Women are more likely than men to say they are not confident or are unsure (71% compared to 56%).
Research findings are drawn from a survey of 1,002 Australians, carried out by YouGov on behalf of Australian Retirement Trust in October 2024.
